Melani was born in Sidney, Montana, on July 24, 1974, to her parents, Charles and Marleen Lowman. Her father and mother both were teachers. She also has a sibling named Channon.
Similarly, her family, starting from her maternal grandparents, Orris M. Bang and Alice Knutson, were graduates of Dickinson State University in 1939 and 1943, respectively. Interestingly, all of their children attended the same university.
Melani’s parents graduated from Dickinson, where they first met, along with her and her sister, Channon. In total, 30 members of her extended family have gone there.
