The Houston Texans are a professional American football team, based in Houston, Texas. The Texans played in the National Football League (NFL) as part of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division member. The team is one of the youngest franchises in the NFL, established in 1999.
Their Establishment Story
After Houston lost its NFL team, the Oilers, to Nashville in 1997, local businessman Bob McNair didn’t give up on bringing major league sports back to the city. Initially, McNair tried to get a National Hockey League team for Houston, but that didn’t work out.
Around the same time, the NFL was looking to expand and add one more team to make the total count 32, so there would be even teams in both conferences.
McNair saw this as a perfect opportunity to bring NFL football back to Houston. He teamed up with Steve Patterson and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to propose a new, domed stadium as part of their bid to get a new team.
Their efforts paid off when, on October 6, 1999, the NFL awarded the 32nd franchise to Houston for a whopping $700 million. The Texans started playing in the 2002 NFL season.
Their Journey In The NFL
Since joining the league, the Texans have experienced a mix of successes and challenges. Their early years were marked by the typical growing pains of an expansion team, struggling to find their footing in the competitive landscape of the NFL.
However, under the leadership of notable players and coaches, the Texans began to show promise. They clinched their first division title in 2011, marking a turning point for the franchise.
This success was followed by several playoff appearances, with the team winning multiple AFC South division championships. Despite these achievements, the Texans have faced criticism for their inability to advance deep into the playoffs and secure a Super Bowl appearance.
